MTN News: Nigeria’s Network Leads in West and Central Africa

MTN Nigeria has become the top performer in mobile speeds in West and Central Africa. A recent Ookla Speedtest report shows that MTN’s 5G network is the fastest in the region. It delivers top download and upload speeds.

Nigeria’s 5G Leads the Region

The Ookla report compared mobile network speeds in five markets where MTN operates. MTN Nigeria came first for download and upload speeds. In the second quarter of 2024, its download speed reached 95.62 Mbps. Its upload speed was 17.01 Mbps. This puts it ahead of other MTN networks in the region.

MTN Ghana followed closely in upload speeds, with 16.74 Mbps. Both Nigeria and Ghana saw big jumps in speeds over the last two years. They also had the best latency performance.

MTN’s Progress Over Two Years

The report looked at MTN’s performance since the second quarter of 2022. MTN Nigeria’s speeds have tripled in just two years. Ghana also made similar gains. Other countries, like Benin and Cameroon, saw significant growth in download speeds. However, MTN Nigeria remains the clear leader.

MTN’s Growing 5G Network

MTN Nigeria launched its 5G service in September 2022. It began with seven major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. By 2024, 5G coverage in Nigeria had grown rapidly. MTN now covers more cities and serves over 131,000 5G subscribers. This is higher than Airtel Nigeria’s 116,372 5G users.

Across the region, MTN has been expanding its 5G footprint. The company rolled out 2,251 5G sites in 2023. It added 829 more in the first half of 2024. MTN also launched 5G services in other African countries like Uganda, Zambia, and Benin. Trials are ongoing in South Sudan.

Nigeria Overtakes South Africa

By mid-2024, 5G penetration in Nigeria reached 35.7%. This marked a sharp rise from 17.2% in early 2023. Nigeria now leads Africa in 5G growth, surpassing South Africa, which has 31.6% penetration.

MTN Nigeria’s Success

MTN Nigeria’s success comes from its focus on expanding 5G technology. It has invested heavily in building infrastructure. The company’s efforts are reflected in its growing user base and improved speeds. This has made it a leader in West and Central Africa.

Conclusion

MTN Nigeria continues to dominate mobile networks in its region. Its 5G services set a high standard for speed and coverage. As the network grows, MTN Nigeria is solidifying its position as a top provider of advanced mobile services.
